All great civilizations rely on rivers because they give water to drink, water to irrigate, water to bathe in, and they make transportation easier and faster. Greece is located in mountains and hills and it is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea. Being surrounded by mountains meant that enemies would have a harder time sneaking up on them and attacking them. Also, being surrounded by the Mediterranen Sea made it ideal because they could easily transport goods to and from their ports. The Ancient Greeks had many religious sanctuaries for many different gods. The bodies of water that surround Greece are the Ionian Sea, Mediterranean Sea, and the Aegean Sea. The large island to the Southeast is Sicily. Both Athens and Sparta are located on the shore of the Mediterranean.
